Pfizer, DOH Launch Heroes for Health Award
 |
To mark its 50th anniversary in the Philippines this year,
Pfizer launched the Heroes for Health Award, a joint project
with the Department of Health to honor five outstanding
Filipinos who have undertaken or supported projects that
have had a significant and sustainable impact on health
care in the country, especially for the poor and underserved
sectors.
A memorandum of agreement has been signed by Pfizer Philippines
President and Country Manager Rey Gerardo E. Bacarro and
Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit outlining the cooperative
activities being undertaken by Pfizer and DOH in connection
with the award.
“This award is a reaffirmation of Pfizer's commitment
towards improving the quality of life of the Filipino
family,” Bacarro said. “Through the award,
Pfizer will be helping these heroes of our times, who
have committed their lives to improving healthcare in
their respective communities. It is our goal to inspire
others by supporting these projects or by undertaking
similar health-related initiatives,” Bacarro pointed
out.
Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit has endorsed the award
project, stating that there are many Filipinos, both in
the cities as well as the hinterlands, “who deserve
to be recognized for doing something above and beyond
the call of duty to help improve the state of health of
our countrymen, especially those with little or no access
to such services. ”
“The Department of Health is happy to partner with
Pfizer in this worthwhile and laudable endeavor, and we
will extend to the program all the assistance we can to
ensure its success,” Dayrit added.
Nominees for the award must be Filipino citizens, who
have exhibited heroic qualities -- devoting much of their
time, effort and personal resources to their projects,
giving up better income and physical comforts, and willing
to risk even their very lives if need be for the fulfillment
of their mission.
The projects that the nominees are involved in must have
been ongoing for at least three years and should have
helped improve the health and quality of life of a great
number of people. These can be in such areas as public
and community healthcare, disease control and management,
philanthropic or voluntary work, people empowerment, capacity-building,
advocacy and education, and the like.
Each of the five awardees will receive P500,000 from Pfizer,
with half or P250,000 of the money going to the awardee
personally and the other half going to the group or organization
that the awardee is connected with for use in sustaining
and expanding the project.
Aside from the cash prize, each of the awardees will receive
a specially-designed medallion, round-trip transportation
from home base to Manila for awarding ceremonies along
with accommodations during their stay in Manila.
Individuals or organizations can nominate an individual
working independently or with an organization. Nomination
forms are available at the Pfizer Corporate Affairs Office,
thru Pfizer field force, DOH Centers for Health Development
(CHDs) and Perceptions, Inc. These can also be downloaded
from www.pfizer.com.ph
and www.doh.gov.ph.
The deadline for submission of nominations is April 30,
2004. Nominations can be submitted to Perceptions, Inc.
at 3/F, Fortune Office Bldg., 160 Legaspi Street, Legazpi
Village, Makati City. They can also be e-mailed to
heroesforhealth@pfizer.com.
There will be zonal screenings to be conducted in Luzon,
Visayas and Mindanao. Judging will be held in Manila by
a distinguished board of judges composed of health, business
and civic leaders in both the government and private sector.
Awarding ceremonies will be held in August 2004 to coincide
with the 50th anniversary celebration of Pfizer.
