In the initiative of self-regulation, the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines (PHAP) recently launched the Medical Representatives Accreditation Program (MRAP), a program that will enable the industry to professionalize and accredit medical representatives.
The MRAP is a standard reference and training tool that the PHAP developed together with Ancilla Enterprise Development Consulting to enable medical representatives to be accredited professionally and to establish a minimum standard for developing a medical representative's professional growth.
The MRAP is a program patterned after several accreditation programs from Australia, Canada and the United States. It has a unique curriculum that addresses identified areas of basic competence in healthcare science and medicine. These include Introduction to the Pharmaceutical Industry in the Philippines, such as the Philippine health care system and ethical business practices, duties, government regulations, industry code and guidelines; Anatomy and Physiology; Basic Pathology and Pharmacology.
The MRAP differentiates individuals within a company and motivates the representative to do more. It distinguishes individuals who intend to develop their jobs within the pharmaceutical industry. As accredited representatives, they will have an edge in applying for positions with other companies.
The MRAP enables a representative to discuss relevant issues concerning disease and its treatment. Having the ability to discuss the relevant role of their products in diseases, demand for these products increases, thereby increasing company earnings.
In its first year, the MRAP aims to accredit 1500 Med Reps from 37 PHAP-member companies. It is PHAP's goal to accredit all Med Reps at the end of 3 years. Currently, there are about 6,500 Med Reps from 87 pharmaceutical companies.
Partner stakeholders in the MRAP include the Marketing Executives of the Pharmaceutical Industry (MEPI), Association of Pharmaceutical Trainors (APT), Philippine College of Pharmaceutical Medicine (PCPM), Philippine Association of Pharmacists in the Pharmaceutical Industry (PAPPI), Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC), the Department of Health and Medical associations.
