Beginnings
The story of Pfizer Philippines can be traced back to 1949 when its products were imported and distributed by Metro Drug Corporation. It was in 1954 when Pfizer was registered as a Philippine corporation with a total of 9 employees. Its entry into the pharmaceutical industry was not without challenges as the business climate in country during the 50's proved to be volatile. To a large extent, the pharmaceutical market potential was yet to be fully tapped.
The pioneering spirit of the Pfizer's local team brought about the establishment of its first manufacturing plant in 1957 housed at Malugay Street in Makati and eventually moved to the Muntinlupa complex. The plant, which was the 9th out of 81 manufacturing facilities established outside of the United States engaged in sterile filing, encapsulation, tabletting, liquid filling and blending.
In 1958, the Agriculture Division was organized in recognition of the tremendous potential growing in this area. Fueled by a dynamic leadership and an optimistic view of what the future had in store for the company, Pfizer inaugurated on February 29, 1980 a new, fully-integrated pharmaceutical manufacturing complex.
However, with the rationalization of global manufacturing sites, the plant ceased to operate in January 1997. The plant's closure marked the first time a major pharmaceuticals manufacturer provided full and advance information to employees about the decision to cease operations. It also marked the shift in focus of the Philippine operation to sales and marketing functions.

The New Pfizer - Bigger and Better
The merger in 2000 of Pfizer and Warner Lambert, another giant in the pharmaceutical industry, marked one of the biggest mergers in global pharmaceutical history. In 2003, Pfizer and Pharmacia Corporation combine operations, bringing together two of the world's fastest-growing and most innovative companies.
The union of these health care giants created the world's largest and most talented biomedical research organization. It combined the power of the industry's best sales, marketing, and manufacturing operations behind a portfolio that includes leading prescription medicines and the world's most comprehensive animal health business. And it linked these strengths to a consumer business with an exceptional ability to bring innovations directly to the customer.
In a span of five decades, the face of Pfizer Philippines has been altered irrevocably. Once a humble establishment of 9 employees, Pfizer today is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the country. All its 1000 employees are committed to achieving Pfizer's vision of improving the quality of life of millions of Filipinos through its innovations in pharmaceutical, consumer and animal health products.
Pfizer consists of the following business units: The Pharmaceutical Products Group, which has an extensive array of pharmaceutical products that lead the cardiovascular, central nervous system, anti-infectives, pain, urological, oncology and ophthalmology markets; The Consumer Health Care Group, the products of which represent some of the industry's leading over-the-counter brands; and the Animal Health Group, the driving force of the Philippine animal health industry. Now more than ever, Pfizer is faced with and has the skills and resources to meet the changes and challenges of the decades to come. Supported by state-of-the-art research and development facilities, Pfizer continues the tradition of excellence and innovation started by the company more than 150 years ago to bring to more people the benefits of modern medicine.
Awards / Recognition
In 2001, Pfizer was named by Fortune Magazine as one of the "World's Most Admired Companies" as well as the "World's Most Admired Pharmaceutical Company." It has also been recognized as "America's Number One Company on Training and Development by Training Magazine, an indication of the premium the company places on its people's growth and development.
On the local front, Pfizer Philippines has also added more feathers to its well-plumed cap. It was recently judged “Employer of the Year” by the Personnel Management Association of the Philippines. This was not the first time the company was recognized as an outstanding employer. In 2001, Pfizer was also selected as one of the “Best Employers” in the Philippines by the prestigious Hewitt Associates-Asian Wall Street Journal-Far Eastern Economic Review. Other local awards include the Grand Anvil Award in 2005 and 2002, Anvil Awards of Excellence in 2003-2005, the PCP Presidential Award from the Philippine College of Physicians and the People Power People Award from former President Corazon Aquino in 2003 for our Leaders for Health Program.

True to the Pfizer tradition of serving the community, it undertook the creation of the Pfizer Foundation in 1997, to create and maintain a partnership between Pfizer, Inc. and the medical community in pursuing worthy projects and relevant programs which will address the needs of the Filipino patients. It is committed to supporting programs that will promote health and save lives of Filipino patients.

Pfizer has established significant programs such as the Leaders For Health Program, in partnership with the Department of Health and the Ateneo Graduate School of Business, which has become a policy program at the Department of Health, the Kythe Child-Life Centers for psycho-social care of pediatric cancer and non-cancer patients, PADE-Pfizer Diabetes Friendly Schools that helps increase awareness on diabetes, the Leukemic Indigent Fund Endowment that supports advocacy programs for childhood leukemia, and Pfizer virtual libraries and website partnerships with 30 medical societies. These programs articulate our sincere commitment to making a sustainable and significant difference in the community by addressing health care concerns.
